Timothy Leary interview from Folsom prison | Boing Boing:
With society moving closer to prioritizing mental health instead of stigmatizing it, it's no coincidence that alternative treatments such as psilocybin are getting a second look. Gee, if only someone with, I don't know, let's say a doctorate in neuroscience could've mentioned the effectiveness of psychedelic drugs decades ago.Watching Dr. Timothy Leary’s interview from prison is surreal for several reasons. The least of which is that Nena von Schlebügge, the woman at the beginning of the video, would eventually become Uma Thruman’s mother. Leary crackles with humor and verve as he rattles off a slew of prescient visions that reflect modern attitudes on drugs at the clinical level.
Stripped of the era’s hysteria, Leary appears less like a lunatic and more like a man who’s in on a hilarious cosmic joke. Even if you’ve seen the video before, it’s worth another viewing. Who knows what else Leary might be predicting from the past?
I’ve read a bit of Leary’s writings, along with Robert Anton Wilson’s non-fiction that interacts with him… He was so far ahead of his time early on, before the drug war radicalized him.
Orgdown - the Interesting Feedback Phase so Far:
The reddit posting was a different thing altogether. The feedback was bad to very bad with only a few positive bits here or there. There was no discussion on the idea at all, just the topic on the choice of the name. When I got heated and wrote that I'd probably prefer to take the project offline, somebody wrote:
This is why we can’t have nice things. The FOSS community tends towards toxic at times, and that can drown out anyone trying to add new things…

How This All Happened · Collaborative Fund:
If you fell asleep in 1945 and woke up in 2018 you would not recognize the world around you. The amount of growth that took place during that period is virtually unprecedented. If you learned that there have been no nuclear attacks since 1945, you’d be shocked. If you saw the level of wealth in New York and San Francisco, you’d be shocked. If you compared it to the poverty of Detroit, you’d be shocked. If you saw the price of homes, college tuition, and health care, you’d be shocked. Our politics would blow your mind. And if you tried to think of a reasonable narrative of how it all happened, my guess is you’d be totally wrong. Because it isn’t intuitive, and it wasn’t foreseeable 73 years ago.

5 Signs It’s Time to Quit Your Job – Accidentally in Code:
By now, we’ve all heard of the great resignation. Over the past 18 months or so, many people have had more time to think about what they want from their jobs, and the kind of conditions they are willing to accept.Of course, the great resignation often glosses over the number of people who died (like “essential workers” who are still somehow not essential enough to merit a living wage) or who were too burnt out to keep going (like healthcare professionals). For knowledge workers, this conversation has often been about perceived entitlement, such as those who don’t want to return to the office.
Regardless, your current job is just a moment in your overall career, and it’s worth thinking critically about whether it’s serving your longer term career goals. So, here are five reasons why you might want to think about quitting.
Hayao Miyazaki Prepares to Cast One Last Spell - The New York Times:

Why We Need to Upgrade Our Face Masks–and Where to Get Them - Scientific American:
A wealth of evidence has shown that wearing a face mask helps prevent people from spreading the virus that causes COVID, SARS-CoV-2, to others and from becoming sick themselves. But there has been less guidance from public health officials on what kind of masks provide the best protection.

I’ve had a creeping distaste for the Youtube site experience for a while, to the point that I’d grab videos to offline to watch them and then delete them over spending time with their video player. This extension fixes that. Worth every penny.

A Close Reading of the QAnon Shaman’s Conspiracy Manifesto ‹ Literary Hub:
The “QAnon shaman”—Jacob Chansley, the tattooed dude having an Excellent Adventure in Mike Pence’s Senate chair on January 6—put a photogenic face on the insurrection, and on Trump’s Idiocracy. Barechested, covered in neo-pagan tattoos, brandishing a spear, and sporting a fur headdress with horns, Chansley was catnip to media outlets. Was he a Burning Man bro gone MAGA? Adam Ant on ayahuasca? Or, as one YouTube wag put it, what you get “when you throw a Republican, a ton of shrooms and MDMA, a scratched DVD of Vikings Season 1, and a sweaty yoga mat into a boiling pot”?

Most of what Vizio is known for is selling TVs to you. Platform+ is their business of selling you, your eyeballs, your data.
When you see two devices of similar quality, and one costs way less, you should think about how their business accomodates that.
(Riddle me this - Every other headset in the same class of the Oculus Quest family costs near 2x as much. Do you think Facebook has somehow managed to find cost efficiencies that elude HP & HTC, or that they plan to make up for the cost difference elsewhere in their business…)

That MAGA hat may indicate a higher likelihood of dying from COVID-19 | Boing Boing:
In October, 25 out of every 100,000 residents of heavily Trump counties died from Covid, more than three times higher than the rate in heavily Biden counties (7.8 per 100,000). October was the fifth consecutive month that the percentage gap between the death rates in Trump counties and Biden counties widened.
You’d think the demographics of this would make the GOP rethink things…
Because at this rate they’re losing a million voters a year.

In a recent press release, Ford has unveiled a unique concept vehicle that consists of a 1978 F-100 pickup electrified using Ford Performance’s Eluminator electric crate motors. That’s the same motor in Ford’s 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition. The $3,900 electric motor is now available to the public, should any EV enthusiasts with the proper conversion knowledge want to create a custom vehicle of their own. Although, you’ll still need to acquire an inverter, battery pack, and control system.
This is super cool.. It sounds like they’re going to follow with turnkey battery/control systems to match, which makes it even more exciting for conversion projects.
U.S. cops race to hit 1000-kill target for year | Boing Boing:
After shooting, beating, choking and kicking their way to 1,021 kills last year and 2019's near-miss count of 999, U.S. police officers are racing to bring 2021's death toll over the the line: Statista reports this week that police killed 716 civilians in the first nine months of 2021. They'll need a busy Christmas season to make it, though, especially with turnout depressed by anti-vaccine politics.

FT writers nominate awe-inspiring places to get your literary fix, from Mumbai to Buenos Aires
This story sits at the intersection of Bookstores and Architecture, every single location breathtaking.
The eyes of the world are upon Minneapolis, understandably and deservedly so. Voters in Minneapolis and people around the world are questioning the conduct of city employees all the way up the chain of command to the mayor. Here it’s important to remind people once again that in Minneapolis’ current system of governance, the mayor has sole authority and oversight of the Police Department and is at the top of the chain of command. Put another way, when it comes to the Police Department, Minneapolis already has a “strong mayor” system of government. So the failure to provide a timely after-action report is, like the Police Department itself, the mayor’s responsibility.
Former Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges basically answers why we need to say No to more executive control by the mayor’s office and Yes to police department reform… On that front, doing Nothing is what we’ve essentialy done so far, so doing Anything is better and the city council is more directly representative of their wards, more answerable to them.
Google ‘colluded’ with Facebook to bypass Apple privacy • The Register:
The alleged Jedi Blue partnership between Google and Facebook, outlined in the initial complaint, is explained in more detail in the latest filing. The two companies, it's said, have been working closely to help Facebook "recognize users in auctions and bid and win more often."“For example, Google and Facebook have integrated their software development kits (SDKs) so that Google can pass Facebook data for user ID cookie matching,” the amended complaint says. “They also coordinated with each other to harm publishers through the adoption of Unified Pricing rules…"

Thousands of workers across the U.S. would rather lose their jobs than be vaccinated | MPR News:
Across the country, employers are firing workers for refusing to comply with vaccine mandates. Some people are opting to quit their jobs rather than take the shot.
